2004 Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

Polished and well knit, offering blueberry, currant and dusky spice flavors,
with a hint of roasted red pepper and a touch of licorice as the finish sails
along beautifully. Drink now through 2014 - H.S. 6/15/07

Tasting Notes: This dark, full-bodied Cabernet is loaded with cassis, black fruit and spice from the first swirl of the glass, gaining dimension on the palate and persisting across a rich, polished finish. - Mike Januik, Winemaker

Vintage: The 2004 Columbia Valley growing season was marked by a hot summer and a cool September, followed by a warm October that finished ripening the grapes late in the season. While the late ripening was tricky for some vineyards carrying a larger-than-average crop load due to a January freeze, those vineyards (including ours) that dropped crop early in the season ripened grapes beautifully and the added hang time improved flavor development.

Vineyards: The Columbia Valley is a diverse growing region that provides a wide range of fruit expression by variety allowing the winemaker to craft rich, multi-layered wines by blending grapes from unique vineyards throughout the region. Vineyard sources that give this wine its richness and complexity include the winery’s estate vineyard Stillwater Creek and other well-known sites including Alder Ridge, Conner Lee and Seven Hills, among others.

Winemaking:

• Gentle pumpovers during fermentation helped extract generous color and flavor while producing supple tannins

• Gravity racked every three months to soften and clarify the wine

• Aged 20 months in predominately French oak barrels new; both new and one-year-old

Blend:

• 89% Cabernet Sauvignon
• 6% Merlot
• 4% Malbec
• 1% Petit Verdot

89 pts. Wine Advocate April 24, 2006

"An extroverted wine, the cassis liqueur, spice, sage, and rosemary-scented 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon is fairly priced. Softly textured, medium-bodied, and boisterously fruity, this offering is jam-packed with herb-laced dark fruits as well as spices. Its edgeless, supple, long finish displays additional notes of sage-tinged dark berries."

2004 Novelty Hill Syrah Columbia Valley

Velvety and gentle on the palate, with currant and dark plum flavors that linger against hints of smoke and spice on the finish. Drink now through 2010. - H.S.

Tasting Notes: Bold and mouth-filling, this dense, earthy wine is loaded with spice and ripe, fruit-forward black cherry and plum aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, the finish is long and lush. - Mike Januik, Winemaker

Vintage: The 2004 Columbia Valley growing season was marked by a hot summer and a cool September, followed by a warm October that finished ripening the grapes late in the season. While the late ripening was tricky for some vineyards carrying a larger-than-average crop load due to a January freeze, we managed our vineyards from the start of the season for balance, yielding fruit with mature flavors and rich character at harvest.

Vineyard: Our Columbia Valley Syrah relies heavily on grapes from Stillwater Creek, Novelty Hill’s estate vineyard located on a steep, south-facing grade on the Royal Slope of the Frenchman Hills. Syrah is planted in a section of the vineyard where the soil is mixed with large pieces of fractured basalt. More than one visitor here has noticed a remarkable similarity to the Rhone Valley, perhaps one reason why Syrah from this site is so outstanding.

Winemaking:

• Hand-picked and fermented in small lots
• Crush, de-stemmed, fermented and gently punched down 2-3 times a day to extract deep color and flavor without harsh tannins
• Aged in a combination of new and one-year-old French oak barrels for 18 months
• Gravity racked every 3 - 4 months

Blend: 100% Syrah

Release Date: Summer 2005

Quantity Produced: 756 cases

"The black fruit-scented 2003 Syrah, a fine value, is medium to full-bodied and offers big, bold black fruit flavors. This satin-textured effort is impressively endowed but appears unwilling to fully blossom on the palate. If this is corrected by short-term aging, my rating will seem overly conservative."

The Oct 2006 issue of the Wine Enthusiast includes some terrific Novelty Hill scores:

92 pts. 2003 NH Syrah, Col Valley
Ripe black fruit and spicy, smoky scents pull you into this smooth and lush gem of a Syrah. Dense and fruit-driven, it's a showcase of the super ripe 2003 vintage, which blessed Washington's Syrah with unprecedented power. Editor's Choice

90 pts. 2004 NH Stillwater Creek Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc
Crisp, authoritative melon and mineral, lined with lime and citrus and pineapple. A lovely wine, concentrated and rich.

91 pts. 2003 NH Stillwater Creek Vineyard Merlot
Rich, powerful and sappy, with a tarry core packed with fruit. Young, concentrated and spicy with whiffs of anise and plum.

89 pts. 2003 NH Merlot, Col Valley
Good, solidly made blend with enough Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc to add coffee aromas and firm up the tannins. It falls away in the finish, getting light and a bit leafy, with echoes of green tea.
